Tips for Residential Propane Tank Safety

Propane is a fuel source used by millions of Americans each day as it’s an excellent environment-friendly energy source. Homeowners are encouraged to use propane tanks to heat their homes and cook their food. It’s important, however, to understand your propane system both inside and outside of the home so you can take appropriate action in case of an emergency.

General Propane Safety Tips

Propane has a lower flammability rating than gas, which makes it completely harmless as long as you follow certain standards for safety. For instance, keep flammable items a safe distance away from the propane tank, and remember to turn off the tank and disconnect your appliances any time you’re not using it.

Always try to store a residential propane tank outside, not in an enclosed space such as a basement or garage. Keep the tank upright away from other heat sources and out of direct sunlight. If the Orlando propane tank has been stored for long periods of time, check it for normal wear and tear before use.

If there is an issue with the tank, do not try to change or modify it by yourself. Propane tanks in Orlando should always be handled by an experienced qualified service technician.

Smelling a Propane Leak

While propane is naturally odorless, a scent is added to the gas so you may be able to detect a leak more easily. The additive is called Ethyl Mercaptan, and it’s very closely associated with rotten eggs or a skunk’s spray. If you feel you may have difficulty smelling propane, we recommend installing a gas detector, which sounds an alarm as soon as it senses the leak. This helps provide an extra layer of security if you believe this is a possibility in the future. Keep in mind that the actual gas itself is non-toxic and not harmful for groundwater or soil. However, a leak is a serious issue that should never be ignored.

In Case of a Propane Leak in Central FL…

Propane leaks are dangerous and should be taken care of immediately. Here is what you should do if you experience a leak in your home:

  • Extinguish all flames or smoking materials close by.
  • Turn off the valve of your propane tank by turning it clockwise.
  • Gather your family, or anyone else in the residence, and leave immediately. Do not turn the lights on or off and do not operate any appliances.
  • Dial 9-1-1 or contact your local fire department using a phone from a safe distance.
  • Do not enter the area again unless it has been cleared by a professional.
